Golden State British Brass Band

Clifton & Lightcliffe Band 2010

During the week of August 23-30, 2010, Golden State was privileged to host the Clifton & Lightcliffe Brass Band of West Yorkshire, England. On Sunday, Aug 30, the bands collaborated in a concert which was presented at the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, CA, a short distance East of Los Angeles. During their stay the C & L band also presented concerts at Disneyland and in Ganesha Park, Pomona, with the Pomona Concert Band in the finale for PCB’s Summer Concert Series.

When not rehearsing or performing the C & L band members and families visited Sea World in San Diego, took a guided tour of the points of interest in Los Angeles & Hollywood, plunged into the Pacific (getting a proper tourist sunburn as proof), and toured the Kanstul Instrument Factory in Anaheim where they took full advantage of the opportunity to have a blow on Kanstul’s latest and best products.

In planning over the last two years the C & L trip was engineered by Musical Director John Clay and his wife, Jane, who visited Los Angeles several months ago to survey the options and make final arrangements. During that time the band raised funds to subsidize members’ costs with concert admissions, contest winnings, and donations from band patrons. Norm & Linda Taylor and Jack Hollander of GSBBB, acted as local contacts throughout the planning period and hosted the Clays on their earlier visit.

The two bands dined together following their joint concert at the Nixon Library. Both groups expressed their enthusiasm for sharing the heritage of brass banding, sharing a mutual passion with new friends, and pressing for a return visit by GSBBB in the near future.
